Trying something new can feel a little daunting, especially when you’re not quite sure what to expect. If you’ve never tried Reformer Pilates before, you might be wondering what the equipment does, what to wear or whether you need any previous experience.
The good news is that our classes are for everyone. Here's what you can expect from your first Reformer Pilates class at Kuwa Pilates.
What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates performed on a specialised piece of apparatus called a Reformer. The Reformer features a moving carriage, springs, straps and a footbar. These elements work together to create resistance and support throughout the exercises.
Unlike traditional weight training, Reformer Pilates uses controlled movements and resistance from the springs to challenge your muscles. Exercises can be adapted in a variety of ways, making Reformer Pilates suitable for different experience levels and abilities.
A typical class may include exercises designed to work your:
- Core
- Legs
- Glutes
- Arms
- Back
You'll also work on balance, stability, mobility and overall body control throughout the class.
Do I need any previous Pilates experience?
No, you don't need to have done Pilates before to attend a Reformer Pilates class. Your instructor will guide you through the equipment, explain the exercises and provide modifications where needed. It's completely normal to feel unfamiliar with the Reformer at first. It can take a little time to get used to the moving carriage, the springs and the different straps and handles. The more classes you attend, the more comfortable the equipment will start to feel.
What should I wear?
Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Grip socks are required for Reformer Pilates. These help provide additional grip and stability while using the equipment. If you don't already have a pair, grip socks are also available to purchase at the studio.
What happens when I arrive?
If it's your first time at the studio, try to arrive a few minutes early so you have time to get settled. Your instructor will show you your Reformer and explain how everything works before the class begins.
What happens during the class?
Your instructor will guide you through the class, demonstrating each exercise and explaining how to use the apparatus, a class may include a combination of movements performed lying down, sitting, kneeling or standing on the Reformer.
The exercises are designed to challenge your strength, stability and control. Your instructor will offer different layers for each exercise throughout the class, allowing you to adjust the movement depending on your experience and how your body feels.
The pace of the class will vary depending on the style of session, but the focus should always be on controlled movement and good technique rather than simply trying to move as quickly as possible.
Will it be difficult?
Every class you take should be challenging not just the first. However, Reformer Pilates can work muscles in ways you may not be used to, so you may notice that certain exercises feel more difficult than expected in your first few classes.
You may also feel muscles working that you don't usually focus on during your regular workouts. Try not to compare yourself to anyone else in the room. Everyone starts at a different level and your instructor can help you find the right option for your body.
Will I be sore afterwards?
It's possible, as with any new form of exercise, you may experience some muscle soreness after your class, particularly if your body is being challenged in new ways. This is usually temporary and should improve as your body becomes more familiar with the movements. Staying hydrated and allowing your body time to recover can help. As you attend more classes, you'll start to become more familiar with the exercises and the equipment.
What if I can't do an exercise?
You don't need to be able to do every exercise perfectly. If something doesn't feel right, let your instructor know. They can offer a modification or an alternative exercise. Your instructor is there to help you learn, so don't be afraid to ask questions. There is no expectation that you'll know how to use the Reformer or understand every exercise before your first class.
How often should I do Reformer Pilates?
This depends on your goals, your schedule and what other types of exercise you enjoy. Some people attend once a week, while others prefer to attend multiple classes as part of their regular routine. The most important thing is finding a frequency that feels realistic and sustainable for you. Consistency is more important than trying to do too much too quickly. You can also combine Reformer Pilates with other forms of exercise, such as strength training, cardio, walking or Mat Pilates.
The most important thing to remember
Your first Reformer Pilates class is about learning. You don't need to know the exercises, understand the apparatus or be particularly flexible or strong before you arrive. Your instructor will guide you through the class and help you become more comfortable with the Reformer as you go. It may feel unfamiliar at first — but that's part of the process.
At Kuwa Pilates, our Reformer classes are designed to help you move, build strength and develop your confidence in a welcoming studio environment. Whether you're completely new to Reformer Pilates or returning after some time away, our instructors are here to help you get started.
So, if you've been thinking about trying Reformer Pilates, this is your sign to book your first class.
